Three vacant seats filled in Tuesday's special elections

Three states-- South Carolina, Connecticut, and Minnesota -- held special elections on April 12, 2011 to fill three state legislative vacancies. Two of these vacant seats were previously held by Republicans, and one by Democrats. Each party retained control of its seats on Tuesday. So far, 41 of the nation's 53 state legislative special elections have been decided.
- In South Carolina's 16th Senate District, Greg Gregory (R) defeated Keith Brann (D) and Stan Smith (L) to fill the seat vacated when Michael Mulvaney (R) was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives.[1]
- In Connecticut's 148th House District, Dan Fox (D) defeated Charles Pia Jr. (R), John Mallozi (D), Rolf Maurer (G), and Monique Thomas (I). Fox will fill the seat vacated when Carlo Leone (D) won election to the Connecticut State Senate in the February 22 special election.[2]
- In Minnesota's 66th Senate District, Mary Jo McGuire (DFL) defeated Greg Copeland (R) to fill the seat vacated when Ellen Anderson (DFL) resigned to serve as chair of the Public Utilities Commission.[3]
