My name is Tiana Thurber, and I grew up in Pittsboro. I am a small business owner and active community leader, and I own Reclamation, a home furnishings and accessories store in downtown Pittsboro. I also serve as president of the Pittsboro Business Association and as a member of the Downtown Pittsboro Board. Through my work, I’ve supported local businesses and helped organize community events such as Summer Fest, the Tree Lighting celebration, and Pittsboro’s Bazaar Night Market. I care deeply about protecting our environment and believe in pursuing smart growth that balances economic development with the preservation of Pittsboro’s unique character and natural resources.
  • As a downtown business owner and president of the Pittsboro Business Association, I understand how vital local businesses are to our economy and quality of life.
  • I believe in smart, balanced growth that preserves Pittsboro’s unique character, protects our natural resources, and plans responsibly for the future.
  • I’ll bring both experience and compassion to decision-making, making sure Pittsboro remains a place where families, businesses, and the environment all thrive.
I believe public policy should be shaped by strong community engagement. That means creating more opportunities for residents to be heard, promoting transparency, and supporting events and programs that bring neighbors together. My priorities include:

Smart Growth & Land Use Planning

Environmental Protection & Sustainability

Small Business & Local Economy

Community Engagement & Civic Participation

Infrastructure & Resilience

Cultural & Community Events
I believe this office is unique and important because it directly shapes the day-to-day lives of residents and the character of the community. Local elected officials have the ability to make decisions that affect growth, infrastructure, the environment, and economic development in a very tangible way. This office serves as a bridge between the community and the broader state government, ensuring that the needs and voices of Pittsboro residents are represented while upholding the legal and regulatory framework that keeps our town functioning smoothly.
I have many people I look up to, especially those who lead with integrity, compassion, and a commitment to their community. I strive to follow the example of leaders who listen attentively, make informed decisions, and work diligently to bring about positive change.
I believe the most important characteristics for an elected official are integrity, transparency, and a commitment to serving the community. Leaders should listen to residents, make decisions based on both facts and the community’s best interests, and work collaboratively to find solutions that benefit everyone. I also value responsibility and accountability.
I believe the core responsibilities of someone elected to this office are listening to the community, making informed decisions, and ensuring that the town’s growth and resources are managed responsibly. An elected official should work to support local businesses, protect the environment, maintain infrastructure, and create opportunities for residents to engage with their government. The role requires transparency, accountability, and a commitment to serving the best interests of all Pittsboro residents.
I want to leave a legacy that shows I stood up for my town and did the hard work to make Pittsboro a stronger, more vibrant community. I hope people remember me as someone who cared deeply about our residents, supported local businesses, protected our environment, and worked tirelessly to bring people together through events and initiatives that strengthen our sense of community. Ultimately, I want my legacy to reflect a commitment to service, integrity, and making a positive difference in the place I’ve always called home.
The first historical event I remember was the Challenger Space Shuttle explosion in 1986. I was home from school that day, and I’ll never forget watching it on TV. I was 9 years old.
My very first job was at Byrd’s here in Pittsboro, where I worked as a cashier for about a year. It was a great experience that gave me my first taste of the working world and allowed me to interact with the community.
One of my favorite books is “Goodnight Moon.” I have fond memories of reading it as a child, and it always reminded me to slow down, appreciate the little things, and find comfort in familiar routines, lessons that still resonate with me today.
If I could be any fictional character, I would choose Wonder Woman or Tinker Bell. I admire Wonder Woman for her strength, courage, and sense of justice, and I love Tinker Bell for her creativity, resourcefulness, and ability to bring a little magic into the world. Both characters inspire me to be bold, helpful, and make a positive difference in my community.
One of the biggest struggles in my life has been rebuilding my store, Reclamation, after Tropical Storm Chantal flooded it. The process of recovering and getting back to business has been a lot of hard work, but it’s also taught me resilience, perseverance, and the importance of community support.
One responsibility that often goes unnoticed is how much influence this office has over planning, zoning, and land use decisions. These decisions shape the town’s growth, protect natural resources, and affect the character of our neighborhoods. Another area people might not realize is the role the office plays in supporting community events and local initiatives, which helps strengthen connections among residents and keeps Pittsboro vibrant. I think it’s important for people to know that the decisions made at this level really have a direct, tangible impact on daily life in our town.
I believe previous experience in government or politics can be helpful, but it isn’t required. What’s most important is having a deep understanding of the community, a commitment to listening to residents, and the ability to make thoughtful, informed decisions. My experience as a small business owner and active community leader has provided me with a strong foundation in problem-solving, collaboration, and understanding the needs of Pittsboro, which I believe is just as valuable as traditional political experience.
I believe the most helpful skills for someone in this office are strong communication, collaboration, and problem-solving abilities. It’s essential to listen to residents, collaborate effectively with fellow board members, and make decisions that strike a balance between the community's immediate needs and long-term planning. Additionally, experience in budgeting, business management, and community development can be very valuable, as it helps ensure that policies and initiatives are both practical and sustainable for Pittsboro.
I believe this office is unique and important because it has a direct impact on the daily lives of residents and the overall character of our community. It influences decisions on growth, infrastructure, the environment, local businesses, and community events, shaping how Pittsboro develops and thrives. This office also serves as a direct link between residents and local government, ensuring that the community’s needs and voices are represented in every decision.
After Tropical Storm Chantal, I spoke with several Pittsboro residents who had also experienced flooding. They stopped by my store while I was cleaning up, and I visited others as I drove by and saw the damage to their homes. Hearing their stories and seeing the resilience of my neighbors deepened my love for this community. Running a store keeps me busy, but it also gives me the chance to hear these personal stories every day, stories that inspire me to serve and run for Town Commissioner.
One accomplishment I’m especially proud of is being recognized as Pittsboro’s Main Street America Champion for volunteerism and downtown revitalization. As a leader in the community, it was an honor to be acknowledged for the work I’ve done to support local businesses, strengthen our community, and help make downtown Pittsboro a vibrant place for residents and visitors alike.
