Tiara Mays is a Michigan native, born in Detroit. She grew up Des Moines and is the proud product of Des Moines Public Schools. Tiara has lived in the city of Johnston for nearly a decade. Tiara has a passion for healthcare and works in managed care provider contracting. Her interest in healthcare began in 2015 when her son was diagnosed with Autism and Intellectual Disability. As a single mother of twins she quickly learned that navigating the healthcare system to get services for her son would require research, dedication and persistence. Through the process of learning how to secure services for her son, Tiara began writing about her experience and sharing her story.

Tiara became a published author and a contributor for Autism Parenting Magazine. Through her continued advocacy for equity in education and healthcare for our state’s most vulnerable populations, Tiara was recently elected as the 1st woman of color to serve on the Heartland Area Education Agency Board of Directors.
I am extremely passionate about healthcare reform. It is important that all Iowans and Americans have access to affordable healthcare. Your income and asset level should not determine the type of healthcare services you have access to, especially life saving services.

Public education in Iowa is also a major passion as well. Not too long ago Iowa ranked number 1 in education. We are currently no where near that. Our legislators need to ensure that proper funding for public schools is the priority.
I look up to my mother. She has always been a champion for her community and I enjoy following in her footsteps.
Integrity, honesty and passion. I feel these are all very necessary to be able to do the work of being an elected official.
To make decisions that are beneficial to Everyone not just your party
The election of President Obama. I was 19 years old and voting for him was my very first time voting.
My very first job was working for a grocery store called Hy-Vee when I was 14 years old. I had the job for only the summer.
It should be a civil example of compromise and working together. An ideal relationship would look like both sides advocating for their state (not just their party)
Right now are state has been lowering income taxes over a period of time to the point of a flat tax rate for everyone. There have been discussions of eliminating income tax completely, which would provide a major issue for our state in terms of revenue. Also we are not properly funding our public school system and if the state continues to underfund public education our ranking will steadily get lower than they already are now.
The drawback is that it lowers the level of checks and balances for state government.
One major benefit though is the ability to pass legislation in a more timely fashion .
I think it is beneficial to have non-career politicians in office. Having everyday, hard working citizens that have experience in how legislation impacts their daily lives should be elected officials. You can learn the skill of legislation but you can not learn "real life" experiences.
Yes it is. Its important to communicate with your legislators and work with them. If they have input from their constituents, its gives them more insight on how a bill may impact who they represent.
Iowa's process is the golden standard across the country with an advisory commission to help the legislature draw the redistricting lines.
Yes I do. One party should not be getting their entire way because that is not representative of the country. Compromise is necessary to ensure that policies can benefit the majority and not just a selected few.
