Tim Mapes is the executive director of the Democratic Party of Illinois and is the longtime chief of staff to Illinois State Representative Michael Madigan (D). Mapes has also served as the chief clerk of the Illinois House of Representatives since 2011.[1] Mapes lives in Springfield, Ill., and is married to psychologist Bronwyn Rains.[2]
Career
While he has been in the Illinois State Legislature since 1977, Tim Mapes has been an aide to Illinois House Speaker Michael Madigan since 1992.[3] With the exceptions of 1995 and 1996, Madigan has been speaker of the house since 1983.[4] In addition, Mapes has been the executive director of the Democratic Party of Illinois since 1998.[3] In 2000, Mapes' dual role came under attack from state Republicans. The Republican Party of Illinois noted that Mapes' position in Madigan's office was paid for by Illinois taxpayers, while he worked as the executive director of the state Democratic Party as a volunteer. According to the Chicago Tribune, "Republicans charged that the arrangement effectively means Mapes' political duties have been subsidized by state taxpayers."[5]
As chief of staff, Mapes has described his role as a communicator above all. He told State Legislatures Magazine, "I regulate disputes occasionally—most often because members believe something they’ve heard, often a conversation out of context. If you take the time to sit down and have a conversation, most of the time they will leave with a better understanding of the issue, of where the caucus is, and of the speaker’s position. It just needs a good, thorough discussion."[1]
