Thornton highlighted the following issues on his campaign website:

My name is Tim Thornton and I’m running for District C’s seat on Montgomery County’s School Board because I know what education is worth. I know how education – and the lack of it – can change lives. I know what education is worth because my grandfather had to leave school after the third grade. His father died, so Granddaddy had to go to work on the farm. I know what education is worth because my father got his GED while serving in the Navy. I know because I’m the first person in my family to graduate from college and – a few months from now – my daughter will be the first to start working on a Ph.D.

I’ve seen how our schools shine and how they fall short. My daughter got an education here – sometimes because of our schools and sometimes in spite of them – that helped her graduate from the University of Virginia in three years, earn a master’s degree and become a teacher herself. My son, who has Down syndrome, finished his last program associated with Montgomery County’s schools in May. Because of what he’s learned and who he’s met in those programs, he’ll begin working part time this August at T/TAC – the Training and Technical Assistance Center at Virginia Tech whose mission is to give young students with disabilities better educational opportunities and more educational success.

I graduated from Shawsville High School, attending classes in the same building where my parents met when it was called Alleghany District High School – the same building where my daughter and my son studied after it became Shawsville Middle School – a building constructed during the Great Depression by the WPA. It’s great to preserve and renovate and use historic buildings — but sometimes we need new ones, too. We need to plan and prepare to pay for that work. Most of all, we need to be sure what goes on in those buildings prepares our children for life – for success – in the world outside those schools.

I’m Tim Thornton and I’m asking you to vote for me because I know what education is worth. I’ve experienced it. I want to make sure all our children know that, too.[4]
