January 30, 2018: Lopez drops out of race

Chicago alderman Raymond Lopez dropped out of the primary on January 30, 2018. His announcement came one day after fellow alderman Joe Moreno withdrew. Lopez had not made an endorsement in the race as of January 31, 2018.[4]

January 29, 2018: Moreno drops out of race

Chicago alderman Joe Moreno dropped out of the primary on January 29, 2018. As of January 30, 2018, he had not made an endorsement in the race.[5]

January 9, 2018: Ramirez-Rosa drops out of race

Chicago alderman Carlos Ramirez-Rosa dropped out of the race on January 9, 2018, throwing his support behind Jesus Garcia.[6]

December 4, 2017: Six Democrats file to run in primary

As of the December 4 filing deadline, six candidates were qualified to run in the 4th Congressional District's Democratic primary. In addition to Jesus Garcia, Chicago Aldermen Carlos Ramirez-Rosa, Joe Moreno, and Raymond Lopez qualified to run. Also filing to run were community activist Sol Flores and former Chicago police lieutenant Richard Gonzalez.

November 30, 2017: Bernie Sanders endorses Garcia

2016 Democratic presidential contender Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) endorsed Jesus Garcia, saying that "He is ready and willing to stand up and fight for the working families of Chicago and our nation and take on the powerful special interests who have far too much power over the economic and political life of our country. He is also an experienced legislator who has risen up the ladder of Chicago’s brawling politics. That makes him well groomed for jumping into the House’s rough and tumble political battles."

November 28, 2017: Gutierrez announces retirement; endorses Garcia as replacement

Luis Gutierrez (D), who had represented Illinois' 4th Congressional District since 1992, announced that he would not seek re-election. He said that he retired in order to focus on relief efforts in Puerto Rico, where he lived as a teenager, in the aftermath of Hurricane Maria. In his retirement announcement, he endorsed Cook County Commissioner Jesus "Chuy" Garcia to replace him.
