Issues in the election

October 16 candidate forum

Six of the seven candidates who ran for the school board appeared at a candidate forum hosted at the Municipal Office Center on October 16, 2014, to debate issues confronting the school district. The Common Core State Standards were the primary issue up for discussion, along with how to handle aging school facilities.

The Times Herald, which reported on the candidate forum, noted afterward that, "Most of the candidates agreed Common Core, a set of standards states are being asked to implement, is a one-size-fits-all plan dictated by the government and curriculum needs to have the flexibility to meet individual student needs." Incumbent Ann E. Murphy defended the standards and explained, "Common Core is not a curriculum — the school district has the ability to create their own curriculum any way they want using those core concepts."

Two challengers, Hayley Alderman and David Carr, disagreed on the best approach to fixing district infrastructure. Alderman stated her support for raising taxes to create additional revenue, which Carr criticized. He insisted that he would not support a tax hike and that the district should use its existing revenue more efficiently to address the problem.

Incumbent David Haynes was not present at the candidate forum.[3]
