ToNola Brown-Bland
ToNola Brown-Bland was a member of the North Carolina Utilities Commission. Brown-Bland assumed office on July 1, 2009. Brown-Bland left office in 2023.
Biography
Brown-Bland was born in Burlington, North Carolina. She graduated from Alamance High School, the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and the Duke University School of Law.
After law school, she clerked for the Honorable Alexander B. Denson, a magistrate judge on the United States District Court for the Eastern District of North Carolina. A year later, she entered private practice with the law firm Hill Evans Jordan & Beatty in Greensboro. She went on to serve as in-house counsel for AT&T Corp.
In 2001, Brown-Bland joined the North Carolina Department of the Secretary of State as director of the business license information office and the charitable solicitations licensing section. In 2002, she joined the staff of the North Carolina utilities commission. From 2005 until her appointment to the commission, Brown-Bland served as associate general counsel with the City of Greensboro.[1]

Brown-Bland was first appointed to the North Carolina Utilities Commission by Gov. Bev Perdue to an unexpired term ending on June 30, 2009, and to a full term beginning July 1, 2009.[2] On May 2, 2017, Brown-Bland was appointed to another six-year term by Gov. Roy Cooper, which expired on June 30, 2023.[3]
