Toby McGrath is a political consultant and serves as government affairs, campaigns and organizational development consultant for Drummond Woodsum. He has been active in federal and state politics for over 10 years and contributed to numerous political campaigns, including both of Barack Obama's presidential bids. He also served in several political office roles, including chief of staff.[1][2] In 2010, Campaigns and Elections Magazine mentioned him as part of its list of rising stars in campaign and election work.[3]

Career

Toby McGrath grew up in Andover, Mass., where he attended Phillips Academy, a coeducational boarding high school. From 1996 to 1999, he studied at Bowdoin College.[1][4]

After graduating, McGrath lived in Los Angeles, Calif., and worked for the Santa Monica Film Festival before returning to Maine.[5] He became caucus director for the Maine House Democratic Campaign Committee in 2002 and worked there for two years.[1]

In 2004, McGrath worked as chief of staff for the House Majority Office and then, in 2006, became chief of staff to Maine House Speaker Glenn Cummings (D).[1][6][7]

McGrath moved from Glenn Cummings' office in 2008 to serve as Maine state director for Barack Obama's presidential campaign. He served in the same role again during Obama’s 2012 presidential re-election bid.[1][7][8]

A year later, McGrath joined the US Small Business Administration as associate administrator of field operations, and then became political director for Maine Street Solutions, a public relations consulting firm affiliated with Verrill Dana, LLP law firm. In 2010, he managed former Maine Attorney General and Verrill Dana Council Steve Rowe's (D) gubernatorial campaign.[1][9][10][11]

McGrath left Maine Street Solutions in 2013 to work as U.S. Senator Angus King's (D) deputy chief of staff. He worked toward an M.A. in organizational psychology and change leadership from Columbia University in 2014, and received the degree in 2015.[1]

As of December 2015, he works at a law firm called Drummond Woodsum as a government affairs, campaigns and organizational development consultant. He also serves on the advisory board of the Ballot Initiative Strategy Center and the advisory board of Emerge Maine.[1]
