|Our job in Public Works Transportation is to keep the City moving. Whether that is roadway capital improvements or cleaning up after a flood or a snowstorm, our crews and efforts try to keep traffic and people moving so they can get to work, school, hobbies, etc. I have been so blessed to work with an amazing staff over the 32 years of my career and look forward to the challenges of including the more rural parts of our county in my next role of engineering.
I am active in my church and community and enjoy watching our City grow and accepting the new challenges that come with it. I helped with the roadway elements of the College World Series stadium that was constructed and debuted in 2011. The Streetcar is the latest major transportation element to come along and the design is just beginning.- Safety is key in transportation engineering. From my first project and throughout my career I have striven to improve safety for our roadway users. Our community has been very successful in the utilization and implementation of safety funding applied to key intersections, roadway corridors and area developments to improve the safety for our citizens. I will continue to focus and produce in this area to improve the safety for our users. During my tenure at the City we have implemented a Vision Zero coordinator and plan to work towards the vision of zero deaths on our roads and trails. I am proud of this effort and will continue to work within the community to achieve these goals.
- Our community is growing and so are the choices they expect from our transportation system. Bike lanes, trails, transit, fixed rail and a robust roadway system are all key elements in providing citizens with choices and options for their transportation needs. Funding sources change almost every year and there is usually a preference towards funding different systems at different times. Having those choices thought out and available for funding options enables our team to be positioned to take advantage of these funding opportunities and be in position to get them constructed and in use for our citizens.
- I have been involved in the Heartland 2050 efforts for almost 20 years now. The goal of this program is to envision our community when the next generation is running it. What will they want it to look like? How can we be ready for the population growth and the needs that come with it? In short, what can we do to try to keep our kids living in the area instead of moving to another area that provides for their needs? This is a very rewarding effort that will change the face of our community for the better and I am anxious to continue this work toward a better community. My experience and knowledge places me in a position to share with others and really have a role in the shaping of our community. It is vital that we get this right.
When we opened the College World Series stadium for the first ever events there, we spent a great deal of time with the transportation and parking systems for our users. These users include Omaha users and a great deal of out or town users who may have never experienced our City before. The stadium was only part of the experience. Obviously that had to be right, but the experience of getting there from a hotel, airport, other state or western part of our City, then finding a parking stall, walking to the stadium, having somewhere to go after the game to get a bite to eat or a beverage, then being able to safely get back to your home or hotel is all part of the experience that we wanted to get right for our end user. This is vital to provide the user with an experience that makes them want to come back to Omaha or visit downtown again. It is this passion that keeps me coming back to tackle new and varied projects within Douglas County more than 30 years into my career.
