Tom was born on a US Air Force base in Germany. His dad’s career as a US Air Force Captain moved Tom’s family a lot throughout his youth. Eventually landing in South Carolina, Tom excelled at baseball, football and basketball at Thomas Sumter Academy where he graduated with a 4.0 grade average. In 2003 he earned a BA from Coker University and was honored with the Distinguished Alumni Award there this year.

In 2007 Tom and his wife opened Smoking Mo’s, a small take-out food stand. In 2012 they purchased a historical building in downtown Shelton. After a complete remodel, with a focus on restoring and protecting the historical features of the space, the restaurant thrived. In 2019 their preservation work continued in another historical space to add High Steel Beer Co. to their business portfolio. The microbrewery’s beer catalog celebrates the Pacific Northwest experience by using locally grown flavors, honoring local landmarks, and celebrating local folklore. Smoking Mo’s was voted #1 BBQ restaurant in Western Washington by King 5 News voters and has been awarded Business of the year by Shelton-Mason County Chamber of Commerce. It was also honored by Pacific Mountain Workforce Development as the recipient of The Nancy Payne Award. Tom is a proud member of The Shelton Rotary Club. He has served on the Shelton-Mason County Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors, and in 2018, he was selected as their Citizen of the Year. He also coaches Jr High basketball.

Tom is a proud father.
  • I want to bring back the feeling of community and connectivity that we’ve lost. I want to find new ways

to celebrate that which unites us. I want to find a path forward to building a county fairground and Mason County welcome center, and I will advocate for more community centric events like a county fair

and rodeo. These types of events not only strengthen our collective bond, they also bolster our local economy.
  • I recognize and appreciate the great benefit and work that our local industries like logging and aquaculture have served our community. While protecting those industries, our land and our waterways, I want to focus on untapped revenue potential from renewed tourism efforts, utilizing the foundation and opportunities that we already have in place here. I believe we are more than just a stop, we are a destination. We are not just the gateway to the Olympics, we can be The Playground of the Olympic Peninsula
  • With new income coming into our community from increased tourism, we can fund new efforts to improve our infrastructure and to provide better facilities and resources to our county employees and local businesses. Tourism income can offset the financial burden of property taxes on local taxpayers, and affordable housing can exist in Mason County again. I will work tirelessly to research solutions that have proven to be successful in areas similar to ours to create a sensible and comprehensive plan to treat mental illness and drug abuse in our community. Ultimately I want to make Mason County a safer, more affordable, sustainable and peaceful place to live.
Economic Development, Infrastructure, and Environmental and Water Management.
Throughout my life I've been fortunate to be under the tutelage of great educators. From Mrs. Bright in 4th Grade, to Mr. Trombley in 6th Grade, to Mr. Rowe in High School, to Dr. Kevin Kenyon in college. Dr. Kenyon's respect and knowledge of history is so admirable and impelling, it makes young people in his presence want to learn. Not only did Dr. Kenyon inspire me to be a better student, he inspired me to be a better person by understanding the way that historical events shape cultures and geographical boundaries around the world.
I hold a Bachelor of Arts degree in History. I've always respected and valued the founding documents of our nation.
Being a business owner, employer, parent and resident of our community for nearly two decades, I have personally seen and experienced firsthand the challenges we face here, but I've also seen and celebrated the potential of our county. This community has allowed me to live the American Dream, and now more than ever I want to give back to the community that has given so much to me. My wife and I have spent 17 years in Mason County as a business owners, navigating the ups and downs of the economy, a pandemic and a natural disaster. We've managed not only to keep our business afloat through tough times but to thrive by using our business as a catalyst for positive change throughout our community. My philosophy as a leader is to lead by example, to lead with positivity and compassion, and to inspire and encourage our employees to realize their own potential. I'm not only comfortable in a leadership role, but can also excel in a support role, and sometimes that's what being a good leader requires. I'm currently on a committee with the Mason General Hospital Foundation working on a major fundraising event. Our committee is made up of different personalities, all with different strengths, but we are all working towards a common goal. Being able to differentiate what's most needed of me at any time is what's made me a successful leader and will make me a better public servant.
Making decisions in the best interest of the entire county. Developing and balancing the county budget. And fostering economic growth in a proactive and sensible way.
Lasting economic growth, a fairground for future generations to enjoy, and a community of people drawn closer together.
When I was 9 years old the Berlin Wall came down. I remember watching the coverage on tv with my family. The pictures of joyful celebration and united families will always stick with me. As elected officials, we must understand and value that every decision we make impacts the lives of our constituents, and the consequences of our actions and leadership can have long lasting affects to the development and evolution of our community.
My very first job was as a dishwasher at an all-you-can-eat buffet in South Carolina. I started work there on my 16th birthday and continued to work there throughout my entire Sophomore year of High School. Perhaps not the way most people would like to celebrate a milestone birthday, but over time I've developed a very strong work ethic which I believe began that evening, digging through bags of trash searching for lost silverware.
Jurassic Park. I read it when I was 12 years old, and it reignited my love of reading. I also love historical fiction.
When my daughter says, "I'm hungry," I say, "Hi hungry, I'm Tom!" I love dad jokes!
I believe transparency and accountability are paramount in our duty as public servants. We work on behalf of the people, and therefore they should be granted the right to maintain a system of checks and balances.
