Chabin filed to run as a Democratic candidate in the 2016 election for Arizona corporation commissioner. Since three seats were up for election, three candidates from each party advanced to the general election. Chabin and William Mundell were the sole Democrats to file and therefore automatically advanced to the November general election.[1]

Incumbent Robert Burns, incumbent Andy Tobin, and Boyd Dunn defeated William Mundell and Tom Chabin in the Arizona corporation commission election.

Chabin ran in the 2012 election for Arizona State Senate District 6. He ran unopposed in the Democratic primary on August 28, 2012. He was defeated in the general election, which took place on November 6, 2012.[3][4]

The demographic characteristics of the state combined with Chabin's personal ties to the area have led to expectations that this race would be one of the most competitive state senate races in Arizona.[5]

Campaign themes

2016

Chabin's campaign website stated his support for anti-corruption measures and small businesses, and included the following positions:[10]

  • Oppose the ludicrous demand charges and other fees that big power companies want to impose on their customers (read more about those here) and will work to ensure consumers are protected from massive electric bill hikes.
  • Restore the ability for consumers to install solar rooftop on their homes in order to save money and control their own energy destiny.
  • Fight to prevent big power companies from wasting ratepayer dollars on political campaigns and exorbitant salaries for executives. Tom will work to keep YOUR money in YOUR pocket.
  • Protect consumers from abuses by big utility companies. We don't need another Flint, Michigan right here in our backyard. Tom will work to keep the water clean, the power on, and natural gas where it should be - underground.[11]

2012

Chabin's website highlighted the following campaign themes:[12]

Quality Education

The Goldwater Institute releases its "Legislative Report Card" annually for all Arizona legislators. This report card tracks how legislators voted on key votes and assigns them a letter grade based on how closely their votes agree with the Institute's positions. The primary values emphasized in the ratings are whether votes expand or restrict liberty.[14]

2012

Chabin received a score of 39 out of 100 in the 2012 report card for a grade of F+ according to the Goldwater Institute’s grading scale. This score was 10 higher than his score on the 2011 report card. Chabin’s 39 in 2012 was the 51st highest grade among all 60 Arizona State Representatives.[14]
