An effort to recall New England Councilman Tom Gorek was initiated in December 2017. A recall petition was circulated for signature gathering as of December 8, 2017, following approval of the petition by the North Dakota Secretary of State.[1]
Recall supporters
Recall organizers initiated the effort because of their opposition to Gorek's support for ordinances dealing with regulation of feral animals during a council meeting in September 2017.[1]
Recall opponents
Gorek told local media that the ordinances in question were based on guidance by the North Dakota League of Cities and adapted based on public feedback.[1]
Mayor Marty Opdahl opposes the recall effort, saying, "There’s been a lot of rumors and misinformation. We had some issues with feral cats and wild animals. The ordinances were very accurate and in tune, nothing out of line."[1]
