What would be your top three priorities, if elected?
Reconfigure economy to a sustainable path involving moving away from weapons production, pay down the debt and transform energy systems to renewables.
What areas of public policy are you personally passionate about?
Moving towards a country where equality for all has been fulfilled. Moving to an economy that functions for all not just the top twenty percent.
Who do you look up to? Whose example would you like to follow, and why?
Thomas Paine for his writing that spurred revolution in the colonies and then across Europe.
Is there a book, essay, film, or something else you would recommend to someone who wants to understand your political philosophy?
When Corporation Rule the World is a good summary of where we are .
What characteristics or principles are most important for an elected official?
Honest intellect fairly applied
What qualities do you possess that you believe would make you a successful officeholder?
I am independent minded exactly what is need to counter the tribe mentality expressed by both major parties.
What do you believe are the core responsibilities for someone elected to this office?
Making sure the budget reflects the desires of the public not the corporations and the wealthy.
What legacy would you like to leave?
A East coast wind way that provide enough power to light the lights and power an electric car fleet.
What is the first historical event that happened in your lifetime that you remember? How old were you at the time?
The Cathedral fire on Farmington Ave about five.
What was your very first job? How long did you have it?
Stock boy to department manager during high school and first two years at UCONN at King's Department stores.
What happened on your most awkward date?
Never had one.
What is your favorite holiday? Why?
Easter. It is a Spring holiday about rebirth of all life.
What is your favorite book? Why?
Lessons of History by Will Durant. It condenses a life time of scholarship into an overview of human history.
If you could be any fictional character, who would you want to be?
Gulliver.
What is your favorite thing in your home or apartment? Why?
My red recliner. It is great to sit in to talk, read or watch Frontline on PBS.
What was the last song that got stuck in your head?
Political World by Bob Dylan. "..and peace is not wanted at all."
What is something that has been a struggle in your life?
Having been born with a spinal defect that ended my teaching career and ripping down a mountain on skis and volleyball playing
What process do you favor for redistricting?
Simple block geometry. The first district is heavily gerrymandered.
What qualities does the U.S. House of Representatives possess that makes it unique as an institution?
It is supposed to be the final arbitrator of going to war. It has as an institution now failed in this primary responsibility. I will vote no appropriation for war funding without an declaration of war passed by Congress.
Do you believe that it's beneficial for representatives to have previous experience in government or politics?
I don't believe direct experience is necessary. Having a good knowledge of how government works is. Very important is having a wide knowledge base. I have read very widely in many fields.
What do you perceive to be the United States’ greatest challenges as a nation over the next decade?
Getting a better education system is fundamental. The US is falling behind the top tier of nations. The future must be faced with an idea of the future not some crap game. Moving manufacturing to additive manufacture is one area where there should be a national economic policy. Cleaning -up the environment in all areas water, air, soil must be accelerated.
If you are not a current representative, are there certain committees that you would want to be a part of?
Would want to join the anti-trust caucus.
Do you believe that two years is the right term length for representatives?
No. There needs to be continuation in government without permanent members. Four years with a term limit of three.
What are your thoughts on term limits?
Term limits are need because the incumbent is so often influence by corporations and interests outside the district.
Is there a particular representative, past or present, whom you want to model yourself after?
William Proxmire.
Both sitting representatives and candidates for office hear many personal stories from the residents of their district. Is there a story that you’ve heard that you found particularly touching, memorable, or impactful?
I have heard from many senior about the same issue-no coverage for eyes, ears and teeth. All equally touching.
