Opposition

The Roanoke County School Board is composed of five members selected by district. The elections for these seats are staggered, and the members serve four-year terms.[5] Three seats were on the general election ballot on November 3, 2015. The seats of Catawba District incumbent David Wymer and Cave Spring District incumbent H. Odell Minnix were up for regularly scheduled election. The Vinton District seat was up for special election due to the resignation of former board member Mike Stovall.[6][7]

Newcomers Donald Butzer and Tom McCracken III faced off for the Catawba District seat, while T.J. Lange and Michael Wray competed for the Cave Spring District seat. McCracken and Wray won their respective races. Tim Greenway won election to the Vinton District seat without opposition.[1]

Candidate website

McCracken's campaign website listed the following themes for 2015:

Tom is passionate about training the next generation! He wants to make a positive difference by helping to shape the lives of our young people to become productive citizens of Roanoke County!

As a dad of children that have gone through Roanoke County schools, still having a child that is attending, and having a wife that is a Roanoke County educator, he has a vested interest in this county. He has found that our community wants a voice of integrity, humility, accessibility, accountability, a strong work ethic and a voice that understands they are representing the Catawba District, not driven by a personal agenda. Tom is that voice!!! [9]
