Campaign themes

2016

Schmit's campaign website highlighted the following issues:

Budget

No individual or institution can spend more than it takes in, indefinitely. Sooner or later the economy will come to its true balance point.

The federal government and most of the states are overdrawn in their budgets and I will work to ensure this does not happen in Wyoming, and not burden its people with the state’s debt problem.

Education:

I believe that school choice, private schools, and competition between private and state school systems are best for the students. The state school system in its present form is an over funded dinosaur and needs some fiscal surgery. Wyoming spends 17,000 per year for student, while South Dakota does it for half that and Utah spends 6,800 dollars per student.

Healthcare:

We need to promote MSA’s, medical savings accounts, private insurance and coop sharing plans, that truly pay medical expenses and compensate the doctors.

Land and Property Rights:

Without property, there is no liberty. America has led the world in achievements, inventions, production and higher standards of living more than anywhere else in the world.

Mineral Industry:

Rumors about the death of the coal industry have been greatly exaggerated. Coal, oil, natural gas, trona and other minerals have funded Wyoming for generations. Refining and processing these raw materials, in Wyoming will fund our state for generations to come, along with creating 1000’s of quality jobs. The manufacturing and industrial centers created by this would also bring research and development to Wyoming to further the uses of these minerals. Perhaps, we could stop exporting our engineers and chemists when they graduate from UW. All wealth comes from land and labor.[1]
