Four seats on the Tomball Independent School District Board of Education were up for general election on November 4, 2014. Positions 1, 2, 3 and 4 were on the ballot. There was only one contested race which was for Position 1. Incumbent Kathy Handler defeated challenger Joseph Ferguson. Unopposed incumbents Michael Pratt, John McStravick and Mark Lewandowski retained Positions 2, 3 and 4, respectively.

Tomball Independent School District is located in both Harris County, Texas and Montgomery County, Texas. Combined, the areas of Harris and Montgomery Counties are home to 4,548,205 residents, according to the United States Census Bureau.[1] In the 2011-2012 school year, Tomball Independent School District was the 94th-largest school district in Texas and served 11,125 students.[2]

Demographics in Harris County

Harris County overperformed in comparison to the rest of Texas in terms of higher education achievement in 2012. The United States Census Bureau found that 28.1 percent of Harris County residents aged 25 years and older had attained a bachelor's degree compared to 26.3 percent for Texas as a whole. The median household income in Harris County was $53,160 compared to $51,563 for the state of Texas. The poverty rate in Harris County was 17.9 percent compared to 17.4 percent for the entire state.[1]

Demographics in Montgomery County

Montgomery County overperformed in comparison to the rest of Texas in terms of higher education achievement in 2012. The United States Census Bureau found that 30.1 percent of Montgomery County residents aged 25 years and older had attained a bachelor's degree compared to 26.3 percent for Texas as a whole. The median household income in Montgomery County was $66,422 compared to $51,563 for the state of Texas. The poverty rate in Montgomery County was 12.3 percent compared to 17.4 percent for the entire state.[1]

Voter and candidate information

The Tomball ISD Board of Trustees consists of seven members elected to four-year terms and serve at large. There was no primary election, and the general election was held on November 4, 2014. Four seats were up for election in 2014.[3]

Candidates began filing nominating petitions on July 19, 2014. The filing deadline for school board candidates to get on the ballot in the general election was August 18, 2014.[4]
