Bice's professional experience began teaching at the Alabama Institute for the Deaf and Blind. From there, he went on to serve in a variety of roles, culminating in him serving as Alabama's deputy state superintendent of education for instructional services. His other roles included high school principal and city school superintendent.[3]

Political career

Alabama Superintendent of Education (2011-2016)

Bice was appointed superintendent of education in November 2011 to replace Joseph B. Morton, who had served since July 13, 2004. Morton announced his retirement in June 2011.[4] Bice was serving as deputy Alabama school superintendent when he was selected by the state school board on November 10, 2011.[5]

Bice announced his retirement on March 31, 2016, in order to become the education director of the Mike and Gillian Goodrich Foundation, a firm based in Birmingham, Alabama.[2] The Alabama Board of Education selected Philip Cleveland as interim superintendent on April 14, 2016, to replace Bice until a permanent replacement could be selected.[6]

The Alabama Superintendent of Education is a state executive position in the Alabama government. The superintendent is the chief executive officer of the state Department of Education and exercises "general control and supervision over the public schools of the state."[7]
