Armenio "Tony" Monteiro is a former at-large representative on the Elizabeth Board of Education in New Jersey. Monteiro sought another term in the general election on November 3, 2015. Monteiro was running as part of the Continue the Progress slate with Elcy Castillo-Ospina and Michelle Velez-Jonte. Tony Monteiro lost the general election on November 3, 2015.

Monteiro was a Democratic candidate for District 20 of the New Jersey General Assembly in 2011 and 2015. He was defeated in the Democratic primary on both occasions.

Opposition

The Elizabeth Board of Education consists of nine members elected at-large to three-year terms. Elections are staggered with three seats up for election each year. At-large incumbents Tony Monteiro, Elcy Castillo-Ospina and Charlene Bathelus were up for re-election on November 3, 2015. Bathelus won re-election, while Stephanie Goncalves and Daniel Nina joined the board. They defeated Monteiro, Castillo-Ospina, Maria Medeiros-DaRassi and Michelle Velez-Jonte. Virginia San Pedro initially filed as a candidate but withdrew prior to the election.[1] Castillo-Ospina, Monteiro and Velez-Jonte were running as part of the Continue the Progress slate.[2]

Monteiro ran as part of the Continue the Progress slate, which reported $5,950.00 in contributions and $4,135.00 in expenditures to the New Jersey Election Law Enforcement Commission as of October 27, 2015.[3]

Endorsements

Monteiro received the endorsement of the Elizabeth Education Association.[4]

Elections for the New Jersey General Assembly took place in 2015. A primary election was held on June 2, 2015. The general election took place on November 3, 2015. The signature filing deadline for candidates wishing to run in this election was March 30, 2015.[5] Since the general assembly uses multi-member districts, the top two candidates from each party in the primaries advanced to the general election. Incumbent Annette Quijano and incumbent Jamel Holley were bracketed together, Jorge Batista and Vivian Bell were bracketed together and Tony Monteiro and Giuliano Farina were bracketed together and faced off in the Democratic primary. Stephen Kozlovich and Roger Stryeski were bracketed together and were unopposed in the Republican primary. Quijano and Holley defeated Kozlovich and Stryeski in the general election.[6][7][8][9][10]

Monteiro was a candidate for the 2011 Democratic Party nomination for District 20 of the New Jersey General Assembly. Monteiro was bracketed with Carlos Cedeno in the June 7 primary. Incumbents Joseph Cryan and Annette Quijano defeated Monteiro and Cedeno for the Democratic nomination.[11]
