An effort to recall Tonya Duffy from her position as the LaMoure County state's attorney in North Dakota was launched in April 2017. The recall petition, which was approved by state elections officers, said that Duffy was "lacking the competency and demeanor to hold the office of the State’s Attorney" and "neglect[ing] to properly perform the duties of the LaMoure County prosecuting attorney."[1] According to The Jamestown Sun, attempts to reach Duffy for a comment were not successful.

The recall did not go to a vote because recall proponents did not have enough signatures. Five petitions containing 170 signatures were thrown out because the circulators did not fully fill out their addresses on the petitions.[2]

Recall supporters

Jay Cink, the chairman of the recall committee, said, "My own personal opinion is she picks and chooses who she will treat well." Another citizen, Michael Dahlen, requested that Duffy resign. Dahlen's son was killed by a drunk driver, and he did not believe that Duffy represented his son's case as well as she could have.[1]

Recall proponents needed to collect 541 valid signatures. This number is equal to 25 percent of the votes cast in the county for the previous gubernatorial election. Proponents turned in 613 signatures on 22 petitions on June 20, 2017. The county auditor's office had 30 days to verify the signatures.[1][3]

The county auditor's office rejected the signatures on five of the 22 petitions because they did not have complete addresses of the circulators filled out on the last page. There were 170 signatures on the rejected petitions, causing the recall proponents be short by 98 signatures.[2]
