Candidate Connection

Tori Goddard completed Ballotpedia's Candidate Connection survey in 2019. The survey questions appear in bold and are followed by Goddard's responses.

What would be your top three priorities, if elected?

My top priorities are ensuring transparency of the Metro Council; bringing back and maintaining affordability for both new and lifelong Nashville residents; and finding real, practical solutions to our transit and infrastructure woes.

What areas of public policy are you personally passionate about?

I am personally passionate about policy concerning children with special healthcare needs, as well as development and zoning policy.

What characteristics or principles are most important for an elected official?

I believe that transparency and integrity are the most important qualities for elected officials.

What qualities do you possess that you believe would make you a successful officeholder?

I have unique qualifications derived from my career and my experiences with my daughter Zoey. By trade, I am a third-generation builder. I have expertise in zoning, a key component of the Metro Council, and understand the best practices for planning and development Nashville must implement to tackle the critical issues of affordability, growth, and infrastructure that we face. On the other hand, Zoey’s complex healthcare needs have refined my collaborative decision-making process. Zoey has 14 specialists, meaning to make the best decisions for her, I must consider inputs from all sides. With 40 members, the Metro Council is a large body that has the ability to be close to its constituents. I am well-equipped to bring a collaborative spirit to the Council to make the best decisions for Nashville.

What do you believe are the core responsibilities for someone elected to this office?

I believe the core responsibilities of this office are to listen to the constituency and be their voice on the Council, while enacting policies that make Nashville a better, safer, and healthier place to live, work, and play.

What legacy would you like to leave?

I would like to leave a legacy of a Metro Council Member who fought everyday for her constituents and always did what she thought was right.

What kind of skills or expertise do you believe would be the most helpful for the holders of this office to possess?

I believe expertise in zoning and development is beneficial to Metro Council Members, especially with the issues of affordability, growth, and transit that Nashville faces.

Ballotpedia biographical submission form

The candidate completed Ballotpedia's biographical information submission form:

What is your political philosophy?

In 2012, my daughter, Zoey, was born with complex heart defects. I was in the hospital by her side for 22 months as she battled through 13 surgeries. From birth, Zoey has had to fight to live, and I vowed to fight to make the world a better place for her and other kids with similar conditions. We have accomplished a lot of change in the General Assembly and in Congress for our most vulnerable children. In the last few years, however, I have seen my neighbors in West Nashville become vulnerable because of irresponsible growth and thoughtless actions by the Metro Council. So, I decided it’s time for me to take my passion, determination, record of legislative accomplishments, and the fight Zoey has inspired in me to the Metro Council to help my neighbors who do not currently have an effective voice in Nashville’s government.

While in office, I hope to tackle the issues of affordability, transit and infrastructure, and responsible growth.

Is there anything you would like to add?

It is an honor to run for this office and I believe Nashville will agree with me that it is time our government acted with integrity and took a people-first approach to serve the underrepresented residents and solve the critical issues we face. Our city is in an incredible place in its history, and has a window of opportunity where a positive, equitable, and citizen-centric course for Nashville’s future can be set by leaders on the Metro Council. With your vote, I will fight everyday to do just that. [2]
