Tosh Sharp is a dedicated Tukwila City Councilmember, union member, and father who believes in accountable leadership that puts residents first. He’s focused on keeping Tukwila safe, affordable, and a place where every family can thrive.

What areas of public policy are you personally passionate about?

I am personally passionate about responsible government spending and fiscal accountability, ensuring that city resources are used efficiently and taxes remain fair and sustainable. I also focus on public safety and community well-being, supporting initiatives that keep neighborhoods safe and foster strong community relationships, as well as affordability and quality of life, helping make Tukwila a livable city for families, workers, and seniors.

What qualities does this office possess that makes it a unique and important part of the state government and legal system?

This office is unique and important because it directly represents the interests of residents at the local level, ensuring that community needs and priorities are reflected in government decisions. It plays a critical role in shaping policies, safeguarding public resources, and maintaining transparency and accountability, which helps build trust between citizens and their government.

What characteristics or principles are most important for an elected official?

I believe the most important characteristics for an elected official are accountability, honesty, and a commitment to service. It is also essential to be direct and transparent in communication, so residents can trust that decisions are made with integrity and in the community’s best interest.

What do you believe are the core responsibilities for someone elected to this office?

I believe the core responsibilities of an elected official are safeguarding public funds, ensuring taxpayer dollars are spent responsibly, and being proactive in addressing the needs of residents. It’s important to make thoughtful decisions that balance fiscal responsibility with the community’s priorities and well-being.

What is the first historical event that happened in your lifetime that you remember? How old were you at the time?

1989 – Fall of the Berlin Wall: I was 11 years old at the time and had no idea what was happening. Looking back, had I understood the significance, it would have been even more awe inspiring, a moment that truly reshaped the world.

Are there any little-known powers or responsibilities held by this office that you believe more people should be aware of?

At the council level, we help determine how the city functions on a fundamental level. We are often the first government entity to manage and allocate residents’ tax dollars, making decisions that directly affect daily life, public services, and the overall health of the community.

Do you believe that it's beneficial for holders of this office to have previous experience in government or politics?

I do not believe previous government or political experience is required. Elected representatives were originally intended to be everyday people with normal lives, bringing practical perspectives and real-world experience to their communities. Public service should be accessible to average Americans, not limited to career politicians.

What kind of skills or expertise do you believe would be the most helpful for the holders of this office to possess?

The most helpful skills for this office include the ability to communicate complex issues clearly so residents can understand, responsiveness to the community’s needs, and the ability to collaborate effectively while staying true to the core principles for which voters elected you.

What qualities does this office possess that makes it a unique and important part of the local government?

The city council is unique and important because it directly shapes how the city operates and sets priorities for local government. It determines how public funds are allocated, oversees essential services, and serves as the first point of contact between residents and their government, ensuring community needs are represented in decision-making.
