I'm a mom, engineer, entrepreneur, world class runner and a lifelong Democrat. I have an engineering degree from Cornell University and a Harvard MBA. I worked in construction, aerospace/defense and the computer industry, where I led large international development projects. While there, I hit the glass ceiling, broke through it and then formed my own successful consulting firm. I am now retired.

I became president of the OUR Center board at the start of the Great Recession, where we came together as a community and helped over 16,000 families stay in their homes. As Chair of the Butterfly Pavilion board, I helped revitalize the organization and set it on a new strategic path. More recently, I have volunteered as a policy analyst for State Senators Mike Foote and Faith Winter.

I have been married to my husband, Frank Bernett, for 36 years and we have been blessed with two wonderful children, Allison and Frank. After running 36 marathons, I recently switched to track and now compete on the world masters circuit. Last year, I was ranked #1 in the world in the indoor mile in my age group. I also enjoy backpacking, gardening and botanical watercolor painting.

  • Environment, because I believe in the science of climate change and because the Colorado Front Range has a serious ozone pollution problem. My son nearly died of an asthma attack when he was two, and the wildfires caused by climate change has caused me to take him to the ER multiple times since then. A friend of mine nearly died in the 2013 floods, when the St Vrain River jumped its banks and cut a new path right through her Longmont home. I'm a world class runner, but I also have asthma, and have to check both the weather and the ozone levels before I run.
  • Education, because I believe investing in education is the best investment we can make as a society, starting from the day a child is born. Growing up in rural New York State, my tiny but well-funded public school prepared me for Ivy League colleges. I am appalled at the lack of investment in education in Colorado, and resulting consequences of overcrowded schools and underfunded services, much of it caused by TABOR.
  • Equity, because I believe in treating everyone with dignity and respect so they can follow their dreams. Equity also includes affordable housing and affordable healthcare. We have a serious affordable housing crisis in Boulder County and across the Front Range. I'm allergic to bees, and walked away from paying $600 for an epi pen prescription. No one should have to choose between paying bills and healthcare, because I believe healthcare is a human right, not a privilege.
We're facing many critical issues: COVID-19, the economic crisis, a broken healthcare system, education funding and more. But I believe if we do not address the climate crisis, all these issues will only get worse.

We have to stop taking our environment for granted. Clean air and water are not unlimited resources. They're a form of infrastructure, and when we abuse and don't repair them, we put all our futures at risk. Investing in the environment creates a more equitable future for all of us, because environmental damage disproportionately impacts the most vulnerable among us: communities of color, the elderly, those struggling to make ends meet, and more.

But I am hopeful, because we have the technology to solve this. It just requires action: at the grassroots, community, state level and beyond. Colorado has taken some positive actions, but there's much more we can do to make our economy more vibrant, our air and water cleaner, our health better, and our communities more resilient.

My two biggest heroes are my parents. My father, an engineer, insisted on honesty, integrity and the pursuit of excellence. He was a man of few words, a brilliant musician, was respected by all his colleagues and friends, and was a steady force in my life.

My mother, a lifelong activist for environmental and social justice causes, instilled in my three brothers and me a passion for making the world a better place. She was brilliant, thoughtful, empathetic, compassionate, hard working, tenacious, spoke truth to power, never took herself too seriously, laughed often, gave hugs with abandon, and was the best mother anyone could ever wish for.

Honesty, integrity, empathy, compassion. Visionary, persistent, determined. Ability to listen, build collations, lead, and get things done.
As a wife, being a best friend and constant supporter of the love of my life, my husband Frank

As a mother, being a friend, confidant, supporter and cheerleader for the lights of my life, my son Frank and daughter Allison.

As a member of the greater Longmont community and state representative, improving the lives of people in my community and across Colorado.
I worked as a draftsman during the four college summer breaks at Moog, Inc, a company that manufactured precision control systems for aerospace, defense and industrial applications. I created the engineering drawings, including ones for the space shuttle program. That was pretty cool!
James Herriot's All Creatures Great and Small. Real life inspiring, humorous and touching stories of a country veterinarian. Great bedtime stories.
Fixing the budget crisis that started with TABOR and that has been exacerbated by the pandemic and current economic crisis. The other longer term challenge is addressing climate change, a critical issue that will take an "all of the above" approach to solving it for decades to come.
Absolutely, and that includes reaching across the aisle to find common ground. My job as a legislator is to get things done that improves the lives of Coloradans, and that are in line the values and positions that got me elected. That cannot be done in a vacuum. It involves building coalitions and support for the bills I want to pass.
I would like to be on the Energy and Environment, Joint Technology, and the Education Committees
There is an elderly couple in my district, who I have talked to several times over the course of my campaign. They have an adult child who is developmentally disabled. He is friendly and well-liked, can hold a job, but is not completely independent and needs help managing his financial affairs. The parents are terrified of what might happen to him when they pass on and are no longer able help him on a daily basis. It breaks my heart, and I hope I will be able to help them find a solution after I am elected.

Scorecards

A scorecard evaluates a legislator’s voting record. Its purpose is to inform voters about the legislator’s political positions. Because scorecards have varying purposes and methodologies, each report should be considered on its own merits. For example, an advocacy group’s scorecard may assess a legislator’s voting record on one issue while a state newspaper’s scorecard may evaluate the voting record in its entirety.

Ballotpedia is in the process of developing an encyclopedic list of published scorecards. Some states have a limited number of available scorecards or scorecards produced only by select groups. It is Ballotpedia’s goal to incorporate all available scorecards regardless of ideology or number.
