Five seats on the Traverse City Area Public Schools Board of Education were up for general election on November 4, 2014.

Incumbents Erik J. Falconer, Scott C. Hardy and Todd M. Sanders ran against challengers Kelly J. Clark, Thomas A. Grigal, Sue Kelly, Letha Polk, John Scrudato and Christine Stalsonburg for the four seats with full four-year terms. Fellow board member Doris Ellery ran unopposed and won a seat with an unexpired two-year term. Board President Kelly M. Hall did not file for re-election.[1][2] Incumbents Erik J. Falconer and Scott C. Hardy and challengers Kelly J. Clark and Sue Kelly defeated the five other candidates to win the four seats with full four-year terms.

Traverse City Area Public Schools is located in Grand Traverse County, Michigan. The county seat is Traverse City. Grand Traverse County is home to 89,987 residents, according to the United States Census Bureau.[3] In the 2011-2012 school year, Traverse City Area Public Schools was the 23rd-largest school district in Michigan and served 9,793 students.[4]

Demographics

Grand Traverse County overperformed compared to the rest of Michigan in terms of higher education achievement in 2012. The United States Census Bureau found that 29.6 percent of Grand Traverse County residents aged 25 years and older had attained a bachelor's degree compared to 25.5 percent for Michigan as a whole. The median household income for Grand Traverse County was $59,063 compared to $51,641 for the state of Michigan. The percentage of people below poverty level for Grand Traverse County was 11.2 percent while it was 16.3 percent for the state of Michigan.[3]

Voter and candidate information

The Traverse City Board of Education consists of seven members elected at large to four-year terms. There was no primary election, and the general election was held on November 4, 2014. Five seats were up for election in 2014, four with full four-year terms and one with an unexpired two-year term.[1]

School board candidates had to file with their county elections department during the candidate filing period, which ended on July 22, 2014. The deadline to withdraw was on July 25, 2014. Write-in candidates had to file by October 24, 2014. To vote in the 2014 general election, voters had to register by October 6, 2014.[6]

Incumbents Erik J. Falconer and Todd M. Sanders and challenger John Scrudato each received an endorsement from The Record-Eagle.[7]

Challenger Thomas A. Grigal received an endorsement from the Traverse City Education Association.[8]
