Campaign themes

2014

Harper's campaign website highlighted the following issues:[2]

Transparency

  • Excerpt: "I’m running because, too often, single party dominance in this state has stifled new ideas, squashed debate, and in the interests of maintaining it’s super-majority, has injured the democracy we hold dear. There needs to be more debate, greater transparency, and more public scrutiny of how our state is run – not more closed meetings where agendas are set and issues decided out of the public eye."

Education

  • Excerpt: "I also am running to strengthen our public education system. Too often I hear the phrase “education is the largest expense in our state” as an excuse for our large and growing class sizes and underpaid teaching staff. We must find a way to do more, and use what we have more efficiently."

Environment

  • Excerpt: "I am also running in order to advocate for our environment. We are blessed to live in an area of great beauty and variety, from desert plains to mountain forests. We owe a great deal of our economy to this land – we need to be better stewards of it. A good place to start is the quality of our air, which, in my nearly 40 years living in this state, I’ve watched steadily decline to the point my 1st-grade child has to be held indoors with her classmates at recess, several times a year, because the outside air is too unhealthy to play in. We must find ways to improve our air – or eventually pay a penalty in reduced tourism."
