Travis Unified School District parcel tax, Measure B (November 2010)
A Travis Unified School District parcel tax, Measure B ballot proposition was on the November 2, 2010 ballot for voters in the Travis Unified School District in Solano County.[1] It was defeated.
The tax, if it had been approved, would have been $250 per parcel per year, lasting for 3 years. Owners of the 5,571 residential parcels and 236 non-residential parcels in the school district would have had to pay the tax.[2]
About $1.5 million would have been raised per year by the tax. The district was experiencing a $3 million/year deficit.
Election results
- Yes: 2,146 (43.34%)
- No: 2,806 (56.66%)
These election results are from the Solano County elections division as of November 27, 2010.
A two-thirds (66.67%) vote was required for enactment.
Support
School board trustee Gary Craig said, "You can only cut so much. It won't solve all the problems, but it will help to some degree."[3]
The editorial board of the Vacaville Reporter recommended a "yes" vote on Measure B, saying, "The school district has done as much as it can to reduce its expenses, but without help from taxpayers, the next round of cuts will be devastating. Voters in the Travis Unified School District should get behind their schools and vote yes on Measure B."[4]
Opposition
Some members of the school board audience during the meeting when the school board voted to put the parcel tax on the November ballot expressed reservations about it.
Dennis Allen, a retired school teacher, said, "If the people who make the decisions or the people who have the authority to change things don't do anything, then I don't blame the people of this district and the people of Solano County for rebelling against this tax."[3]
Ken Brand, a Fairfield resident, said, "We are already having to worry about mortgages, utilities, food, vehicles, insurance, other bills, this that and the other. This is just another bill that will sink the ship."[3]
