McAlhaney ran for election to the office of Governor of Kansas in 2014. She unsuccessfully sought the Libertarian nomination alongside lieutenant gubernatorial running-mate Grant Nelson at the state party convention on April 26, 2014. The general election took place on November 4, 2014.
