I am a lifelong South Portland resident and local sailor, organizer, notary, and ocean engineer. I have been all over the state, and once I am done with this term in the Legislature will go back to pursuing a captain's license and my dream of getting traditionally rigged boats back into working roles on the ocean. Prior work has included waterfront work for the City of South Portland and for a Downeast fishing camp, crewing passenger day sails on traditionally rigged schooners, assembling Covid test kits at Abbott Labs, designing and testing gear for shellfish aquaculture, teaching after school STEM courses for elementary and middle schoolers, and serving as the Moderator and Vice President of URI Student Senate, Inc.
  • A community's power comes from its people.
  • The best solutions are sustainable long-term.
  • The best policies are clear and concise.
All of them but especially issues of civil rights, human needs, and transportation. I think that Maine should approach lawmaking with a goal of ensuring that every resident is safely housed and fed, can get to where they need to go, and has a say in their society and in their future.
Sadly no: while there are many excellent books, movies, and essays out there, I have yet to find one that fully captures my whole philosophy. It is centered around involvement and compassion, and is profoundly egalitarian.
The ability to sort through many viewpoints for the ones that are most actionable and compassionate.
I'd like to give people the idea that politics doesn't have to be a career, and that the responsibility of governing can and should be shared.
Ideally the Legislature determines policy and the Governor acts on it. Ideally, this means that policies enacted by the Legislature are reliably actionable.
Establishing and/or maintaining a culture of mutual compassion and support through whatever changes are to come.
It can be handy but I don't think it's essential. I'm honestly just as interested to know what politicians are going to do AFTER they're done in the Legislature, because that helps give me an idea of what they're doing there.
Not particularly. I believe in spreading out the work and responsibility of government. After 2024, I intend to go back to my career in sailing and food production.
Respect is necessary; cooperation is desirable but relies on the good faith of all parties, certain of which have a habit of withholding for the sake of drama and publicity.
N/A. There will not be an opportunity for me to introduce original legislation this term due to the timing of the special election. That said, I would like to talk to other legislators about ways to improve access to housing and support/celebrate the new food sovereignty amendment in our constitution in future terms.
