Troy L. Nunley is the chief judge for the United States District Court for the Eastern District of California. He joined the court in 2013 after a nomination from Barack Obama. In 2024, Nunley became the chief judge of the court.[1]
Prior to joining the court, he was a judge for the Superior Court of Sacramento County in California.[2][3][1]
Early life and education
Nunley earned a B.A. in 1986 from St. Mary's College in California and went on to earn his J.D. in 1990 from University of California, Hastings College of the Law.[4]

Nunley was appointed on June 25, 2012 by Barack Obama to a seat on the United States District Court for the Eastern District of California vacated by Garland Burrell.[5] Obama commented on the nomination, stating, "I am pleased to nominate these distinguished individuals to serve on the United States District Court bench. I am confident they will serve the American people with integrity and a steadfast commitment to justice."[4]
Nunley was rated Majority Qualified, Minority Well Qualified by the American Bar Association. Nunley's nomination was returned to the president on January 3, 2013. The nomination was resubmitted on January 4, 2013.[6]
On March 23, 2013, the United States Senate confirmed Troy L. Nunley to the United States District Court for the Eastern District of California with voice vote.[7][8]
Nunley became chief judge of the court in 2024.[1]
