Truman McGill Hobbs Sr. (Alabama federal district court judge)

Truman McGill Hobbs was a Article III federal judge for the United States District Court for the Middle District of Alabama. He joined the court in 1980 after being nominated by President Jimmy Carter. Hobbs served on senior status until his death on November 4, 2015.[1][2]
Education
Hobbs graduated from the University of North Carolina with his bachelor's degree in 1942 and he received his J.D. degree from Yale Law School in 1948. His son, Truman McGill Hobbs Jr., is the Democratic Place 2 judge on the Alabama 15th Judicial Circuit.[1]
Military service
Hobbs was in the United States Navy from 1942 to 1946.[1]
Professional career
After law school, Hobbs became a law clerk for former United States Supreme Court Justice Hugo Black, from 1948 to 1949. From 1949 to 1980, Hobbs was a private practice attorney in the State of Alabama. He also served as the Chairman of the Alabama Board of Unemployment Appeals from 1952 to 1958.[1]
Judicial career
Middle District of Alabama
Hobbs was nominated by President Jimmy Carter on January 23, 1980, to a new judgeship created by 92 Stat. 1629. Hobbs was confirmed by the U.S. Senate on April 3, 1980, and received commission on April 3, 1980. Hobbs served as chief judge of the court from 1984 to 1991 before later assuming senior status on February 11, 1991. Hobbs served on senior status until his death on November 4, 2015[1][2]
