Two seats on the Tuscaloosa County School System school board were up for general election on November 4, 2014.

Incumbent James Barnett (R) won re-election unopposed in District 2. Newcomer Lanita Bostic (D) was defeated by former board member Don Presley (R) in the District 4 race.

Tuscaloosa County School System is located in Tuscaloosa County, Alabama. The county seat of Tuscaloosa County is Tuscaloosa. Tuscaloosa County is home to 17,631 residents, according to the United States Census Bureau.[1] In the 2011-2012 school year, Tuscaloosa County School System was the ninth-largest school district in Alabama and served 17,631 students.[2]

Demographics

Tuscaloosa County outperformed the rest of Alabama in terms of higher education achievement in 2013. The United States Census Bureau found that 26.6 percent of Tuscaloosa County residents aged 25 years and older had attained a bachelor's degree compared to 22.3 percent for Alabama as a whole. The median household income in Tuscaloosa County was $43,996 compared to $43,160 for the state of Alabama. The poverty rate in Tuscaloosa County was 19.2 percent compared to 18.1 percent for the entire state.[1]

The Tuscaloosa school board consists of seven members elected to six-year terms by geographic electoral districts. There was no primary election, and the general election was held on November 4, 2014. Two seats were on the ballot in 2014.[4]

The filing deadline for school board candidates to get on the ballot in the general election was February 7, 2014.[5]

Unofficial results

Ballotpedia has not collected certified election result totals for this race due to demands from the Tuscaloosa County Probate Judge's office that payment is provided for the information. Of the 12 school board elections in Alabama that Ballotpedia covered in 2014, Tuscaloosa County's Probate Judge was the only office to refuse to provide accurate election results free of charge. It was one of only two elections out of the 667 school board elections Ballotpedia covered in 2014 where accurate, final election results are not available without charge to the public. Probate Judge Hardy McCollum did not comment when asked by Ballotpedia to explain why his office would not provide accurate results free of charge.
