Two of the seven seats on the Tuscaloosa County School System school board were up for general election on November 8, 2016. A primary election was held on March 1, 2016.
District 5 incumbent Charles Orr (R) and District 6 incumbent Joe Boteler (R) filed for re-election. Orr was appointed to the board after the primary to replace Mark Nelson (R), while Boteler faced challenger Randy Smalley (R) in the primary. Smalley defeated Boteler to win the District 6 Republican nomination. Orr and Smalley won re-election without opposition in the general election.[1]

The Tuscaloosa County Board of Education consists of seven members elected by district to six-year terms. Two seats were up for election in 2014. Prospective board candidates were required to file with county party officials by November 6, 2015.[2]

Tuscaloosa County School System is located in Tuscaloosa County, Alabama. The seat of county government is Tuscaloosa. Tuscaloosa County was home to 202,212 residents in 2014, according to the United States Census Bureau.[7] The district was the ninth-largest school district in the state in the 2013–2014 school year and served 17,860 students.[8]
Demographics
Tuscaloosa County outperformed the state of Alabama in terms of higher education achievement in 2013. The United States Census Bureau found that 27.0 percent of Tuscaloosa County residents aged 25 years and older had attained a bachelor's degree, compared to 22.6 percent for Alabama as a whole. The median household income in Tuscaloosa County was $45,408, compared to $43,253 for the state of Alabama. The poverty rate in Tuscaloosa County was 18.9 percent, compared to 18.6 percent for the entire state.[7]
