An effort to recall Mike Ridley, Bobbi Balazovic, Susan Fisher, Craig Waldron and Jane McGinnis from their elected positions on the township board in Tuscarora, Michigan was launched in May 2012.[1] The recall effort was abandoned in late May 2012 after recall organizers failed to meet the signature submission deadline.[2] Ridley served as township supervisor, Balaovic served as treasurer, Fisher served as clerk, and Waldron and McGinnis served as trustees. All five elected officials were for up for re-election in November 2012.
Reasons for recall
Fred Goddard of the Citizens for Better Government organized the recall effort. The recall petition said that the targeted officials "violated the public trust by denying the citizens of Tuscarora Township the fundamental right to vote on an over $4 million sewer system...There was no current needs assessment for this project...The sewer system plan was created at meetings not open to the public.” Recall organizers also accuse township officials of refusing to answer fair questions posed to them about the project, refusing to meet with affected property owners, failing to divide the costs of the system fairly and reasonably, and not considering lower cost options.[1]
Path to the ballot
The petitions were approved for circulation at a clarity hearing on May 14. The deadline for submission was May 21. The expedited deadline was due to the fact that elected officials cannot be recalled during their last six months in office, and all five targeted officials are up for re-election in November 2012.[1] 344 signatures were necessary to force a recall. Recall organizers did not submit the necessary amount of signatures by the recall deadline, and the recall effort came to an end.[2]
