Three seats on the Twin Rivers Unified School District Board of Education were up for general election on June 3, 2014. All three incumbents ran for re-election to their seats. In Area 2, former board member Michelle Rivas defeated incumbent John Dexter, who won the seat from her in 2012. Two challengers, including former board member Roger Westrup, failed to defeat the Area 6 member, Rebecca Sandoval. Area 4 incumbent Bob Bastian ran unopposed and won re-election by default without appearing on the ballot.[1]

Twin Rivers Unified School District is located in Sacramento County, California. The county seat of Sacramento County is Sacramento. Sacramento County is home to 1,462,131 residents, according to the United States Census Bureau.[2] In the 2011-2012 school year, Twin Rivers Unified School District was the 27th-largest school district in California and served 31,637 students.[3]

Demographics

Sacramento County underperformed in comparison to the rest of California in terms of higher education achievement in 2012. The United States Census Bureau found that 27.9 percent of Sacramento County residents aged 25 years and older had attained a bachelor's degree compared to 30.5 percent for California as a whole. The median household income in Sacramento County was $55,846 compared to $61,400 for the state of California. The poverty rate in Sacramento County was 16.5 percent compared to 15.3 percent for the entire state.[2]

Voter and candidate information

The Twin Rivers Board of Education consists of seven members elected to four-year terms by specific geographic districts. There was no primary election, and the general election was held on June 3, 2014. Three seats were up for election in 2014 and four seats were up for election in 2016.[5]

The filing deadline for school board candidates to get on the ballot in the general election was March 7, 2014, and the deadline to file as a write-in candidate was May 20, 2014. In order to vote in the election, residents were required to register to vote by May 19, 2014.[6][7]
