Tyra McCollum was born in Lafayette, Louisiana. She earned a bachelor's degree from the University of Texas in 1991 and a law degree from the University of Houston Law Center in 1994. Her career experience includes working as an attorney.[1]

I grew up in Missouri City, Fort Bend County, Texas where I attended elementary, middle and high school, and am currently honored on the Willowridge High School Wall of Honor. I received a B.B.A. in Business Management from University of Texas (Austin) in 1991, and a J.D. from University of Houston Law Center in 1994. My entire career has been in public service as an Assistant City Attorney in Tyler, Texas and an Assistant District Attorney in Fort Bend County, Texas where I have served as Chief of the Juvenile Division since 2004. I have litigated over 150 career contested trials and hearings. I currently serve on the Fort Bend County Children's Advocacy Center Advisory Council, Sugar Land Memorial Hermann Hospital Community Advisory Board, and the Board of Directors for the Exchange Club of Fort Bend. I am most proud of my philanthropic work as a member of Jack and Jill of America, Inc. and Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. I am an Adjunct Professor at Houston Baptist University (HBU) and frequently present on topics on juvenile law and the justice system. I have been married for 26 years and have three sons.
  • Balancing justice with compassion. It is important to hold individual's accountable for their actions with consequences that are measured with meritorious compassion.
  • Knowledgeable and fair interpretation of the law. It is important to be committed to continuous academic study of law.
  • Engagement and service in the community. It is important to serve as a citizen in the community and lead by example.
I am particularly passionate about the positive educational and societal trajectory of juveniles and emerging adults overall and within the juvenile justice and criminal justice systems. I am committed to fulfilling my duties in the court system in a manner that legally reflects juvenile, civil and criminal justice systems that are diverse and inclusive in access and fair in results. Courtrooms and proceedings should also be comfortably accessible and inclusive to persons with disabilities.
