The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is an agency in the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services responsible for monitoring health risks both in the U.S. and abroad.[1]
History
The Communicable Disease Center was opened in 1946 with the intent of stopping the spread of malaria throughout the United States. The beginning budget was $10 million for an agency employing 400 people. In 1949, the U.S. was declared malaria free. The Epidemic Intelligence Service was established in 1953, working to defend against biological warfare as well as man-made disease outbreaks. The agency assisted in curing smallpox in 1962, polio in 1994 and rubella in 2005. Additionally, the CDC runs anti-smoking campaigns.[2]
The agency changed names in 1970 to the Center for Disease Control.[2]
