Elections for all 435 U.S. House seats took place in 2026. Ballotpedia identified 42 of the 435 House races (12%) as battlegrounds.

These battleground races were selected using the following criteria. For more information on our methodology, click here.

  • the 2024 winner's margin of victory,
  • the results of the 2024 presidential election in the district,
  • whether the incumbent was seeking re-election,
  • whether the incumbent was serving his or her first term in Congress, and
  • how the Cook Political Report with Amy Walter, Decision Desk HQ and The Hill, and Inside Elections with Nathan Gonzales, and Sabato's Crystal Ball.

In addition to the competitiveness data above, races were included if they were particularly compelling or meaningful to the balance of power in governments for other reasons.
