Five seats on the Union County Public Schools school board were up for general election on November 4, 2014.
Incumbent Jim H. Benton, Sr. faced Sharon C. Harrell for the District 1 seat. In District 3, newcomer Gary Sides challenged incumbent Richard A. Yercheck. Newcomers Casey Carver, Monica Earp Frank and Melissa Merrell ran for the District 4 seat. Incumbent Marce Savage faced Jason Marton for re-election to the District 6 seat. Harrell, Sides, Merrell and Savage won election to their respective seats. Challenger Leslie Boyd defeated Dennis Rape and Sean Maher for the at-large seat.[1]
About the district
Union County Public Schools is located in Union County, North Carolina. The county seat of Union County is Monroe. Union County is home to 91,878 residents, according to the United States Census Bureau.[2] In the 2011-2012 school year, Union County Public Schools was the sixth-largest school district in North Carolina and served 40,111 students.[3]
Demographics
Union County outperformed in comparison to the rest of North Carolina in terms of higher education achievement in 2013. The United States Census Bureau found that 30.8 percent of Union County residents aged 25 years and older had attained a bachelor's degree compared to 26.8 percent for North Carolina as a whole. The median household income in Union County was $64,953 compared to $46,450 for the state of North Carolina. The poverty rate in Union County was 9.7 percent compared to 16.8 percent for the entire state.[2]

Voter and candidate information
The Union County school board consists of nine members elected to four-year terms. Six members are elected by geographic electoral district and three members are elected at-large. There was no primary election, and the general election was held on November 4, 2014. Five seats were on the ballot in 2014.[5]
The filing deadline for school board candidates to get on the ballot in the general election was July 25, 2014.[6]
