This page is about a former federal court. For a list of active courts, see: United States federal courts.

The United States Circuit Court for the District of Virginia was established as part of the Judiciary Act of 1789. It was dissolved as part of a reformation of the circuit court system by the Judiciary Act of 1801, but it was restored with the repeal of that act in 1802. It was again abolished in 1819, with the division of Virginia into Eastern and Western judicial districts. In 1864, after the admission of West Virginia into the Union, what remained of Virginia was reorganized into one judicial district, and its appeals went to the reestablished Circuit Court for the District of Virginia. This circuit court was permanently abolished on February 3, 1879, when Virginia was again divided into Eastern and Western judicial districts, and their respective Eastern and Western circuit courts.[1]
