United States District Court for the District of California
The United States District Court for the District of California was created by Congress in 1866, as a unification of the former Northern and Southern Districts. In 1886, Congress reinstated the Northern and Southern Districts. During the twenty-year existence of the court, there was only one judgeship authorized. Ogden Hoffman filled this position for the entire life of the court. He served on the Southern District prior to the 1866 division, and continued serving the Northern District after the 1886 re-division until his death in 1891.[1][2]
