This page is about a former federal court. For a list of active courts, see: United States federal courts.

The United States District Court for the District of Kentucky was created by Congress as part of the Judiciary Act of 1789, with one judgeship authorized for the district. At the time, Kentucky was part of Virginia, but had a separate district court with the same authority as other states had at that time. The District of Kentucky was abolished by the Judiciary Act of 1801, and reinstated when that act was repealed by the Judiciary Act of 1802. The District of Kentucky was divided into Eastern and Western Districts, with one judgeship authorized for each.[1]
