This page is about a former federal court. For a list of active courts, see: United States federal courts.

The United States District Court for the District of Tennessee was created by Congress in 1797. It was dissolved by the Judiciary Act of 1801, and was briefly restored by the repeal of that act in 1802. Shortly thereafter, the Judiciary Act of 1802 divided Tennessee into Eastern and Western districts, which it retains to this day (although a Middle District has been added).[1]
