The United States District Court for the District of West Virginia was created by Congress in 1864, shortly after West Virginia was separated from Virginia. Before that time, Virginia had been divided into Eastern and Western Districts; the District of West Virginia was formed from what had been a part of the Western District of Virginia. The District of West Virginia was abolished in 1901, when West Virginia was divided into Northern and Southern Districts.[1]
