According to the New York Times race ratings in October 2012, three of the 16 districts were considered to be in play. Those were the 6th, 7th and 16th districts.[2]
The Center for Voting and Democracy (Fairvote) projected that Democrats would win four districts while Republicans would win nine seats. It did not make a projection for the remaining three districts.[3]
Primary competitiveness
Ohio tied with Missouri, Nevada, and Mississippi for having the 15th most competitive congressional primaries in 2012, with 62.5% of major party primaries having been contested (20 out of 32). The national average was 54.31%.
Sixteen U.S. House incumbents ran for re-election in Ohio in 2012. 10 of those 16 (62.5%) faced a primary challenger. Nationwide, 200 out of the 386 incumbents seeking re-election faced a primary challenger (51.81%).
