As of March 2018, 5 Republicans are running for the seat. This page focuses on the Republican primary. For an overview of the election in general, click here. Attorney Corey Stewart, the only Republican senatorial candidate in Virginia to raise money—$190,000—through the third quarter of 2017, received 12 percent support in a September 2017 Republican primary poll from the University of Mary Washington. He was placed in a hypothetical race against U.S. Reps. Dave Brat and Scott Taylor, neither of whom had declared entry in the race, as of March 2018.[4] Although Stewart served as Virginia co-chair of President Donald Trump's 2016 presidential campaign, it is unclear whether Trump would support his candidacy. Stewart was removed from the position on October 10, 2016, after participating in a protest in front of the Republican National Committee (RNC) headquarters aimed at encouraging the RNC to support Trump's candidacy. The Trump campaign had distanced itself from the protest out of concern that the event would increase tensions between the Republican establishment and the campaign.[5]
