The Unity Party of America was founded by Bill Hammons in November 2004, one day after the presidential election that year. The party was founded as a centrist party, according to Hammons. In an interview with Colorado Public Radio in July 2017, Hammons said, "We're centrists. We're not an ideological party. ... We're a more practical party in terms of what we believe in. That's not to say that we don't have some very strong positions."[1] The party's slogan is "Not right, not left, but forward."[2]

In June 2017, the Unity Party of Colorado became a minor political party in the state. Prior to achieving minor party status, the organization was considered a qualified political organization, with members of the party having to petition to gain ballot access.[3]
