Tuscaloosa, Alabama: Despite lacking the status of an Ivy League institution, the University of Alabama has proven remarkably capable of pulling in top judicial speakers, including all of the current members of the Supreme Court of the United States. Records obtained by the Associated Press show that in addition to connections with current judges and senators, the Crimson Tide administration is able to offer perks like “ spare ribs slathered with barbecue sauce, Crimson Tide football games and, in one case, a copy of "To Kill a Mockingbird" autographed by author Harper Lee.” The schools success is partially accounted for by the Albritton Lecture Series founded by the family of U.S. District Judge W. Harold Albritton, which has brought 10 Supreme Court members and justices from Australia, Canada and Israel to speak at the law school. Commenting on the success of the program, Judge Albritton told the press, "It's not big-time wining and dining, it's just being pleasant to people." However, Judge Albritton does mark one missed opportunity, telling the Associated Press, "The only one I wasn't able to get is Souter, and he just doesn't do these things."[1] The University of Alabama currently ranks 10'th for number of current Article III judges who are alumni and 16'th for total judges with 10 federal judges, 4 senior federal judges and 9 former federal judges, for a total of 23 Article III judges.
