Elections
Voter and candidate information
The Utica City Board of Education consists of seven members elected to five-year terms. Elections are held at large on a staggered basis every year in May. One seat was up for election on May 17, 2016, and two seats were up for election on May 16, 2017.[3]
To qualify for the ballot, school board candidates had to be at least 18 years old, U.S. citizens, and legal residents of the district for a minimum of one uninterrupted year prior to the election. They had to also be able to read and write, could not be employees of the district, and could not have been removed from another school board office within one year of the election. Only one member from each household was permitted to serve on the board of education during a given year, and school board members could not serve in incompatible offices at the same time as the board of education, which included all city offices except police officer or firefighter.[4] To get on the ballot, candidates had to file a petition signed by 100 qualified voters of the school district with the district clerk by April 26, 2017.[5]
