Two seats on the Utica Community Schools Board of Education were up for general election on November 4, 2014.
Incumbents Denyeal Nesovski and Jennifer L. Prybys ran against challengers Ronald Simon Albers, Carolyn Gammicchia, Paul Romanczuk, and Mary K. Thomas for the seats.[1] Incumbent Jennifer L. Prybys and challenger Mary K. Thomas defeated the other four candidates for the seats.

Utica Community Schools is located in Macomb County, Michigan. The county seat is Mount Clemens. Macomb County had a population of 854,769 residents, according to the United States Census Bureau in 2014.[2] In the 2011-2012 school year, Utica Community Schools was the second-largest school district in Michigan and served 28,606 students.[3]
Demographics
In 2012, Macomb County had a lower percentage of residents with a bachelor's degree compared to the state overall. The United States Census Bureau reported that 22.2 percent of residents aged 25 and older in Macomb County had earned a bachelor's degree, compared with 25.5 percent for Michigan. The county’s median household income was $53,628, above the state median of $48,471. The poverty rate in Macomb County was 11.8 percent, below the state rate of 16.3 percent.[2]

Voter and candidate information
As of the 2014 election, the Utica Board of Education consisted of seven members elected at-large to six-year terms. There was no primary election, and the general election was held on November 4, 2014. Two seats were up for election in 2014.[1]
School board candidates had to file with their county elections department during the candidate filing period, which ended on July 22, 2014. The deadline to withdraw was on July 25, 2014. Write-in candidates had to file by October 24, 2014. To vote in the 2014 general election, voters had to register by October 6, 2014.[5]

Endorsements
Incumbent Denyeal Nesovski and challenger Mary K. Thomas each received endorsements from the local chapters of the Michigan Education Association and the UAW.[6][7]
Nesovski also received an endorsement from the Utica PAC.[8]
Thomas also received an endorsement from the Utica Paraprofessional Association.[9]
Campaign finance
Candidates reported $32,372.73 in contributions and $17,548.87 in expenditures during the election, according to the Macomb County Election Department.[10]
In Michigan, candidates are prohibited from receiving contributions from corporations or labor organizations. Within 10 days of becoming a candidate, candidates must form a candidate committee. Following the creation of the committee, candidates have an additional 10 days to register the committee with the school district by filing a statement of organization. A candidate committee that does not expect to receive or spend more than $1,000 during the election cycle is eligible to receive a reporting waiver, which allows that committee not to file pre-election, post-election and annual campaign statements without legal penalty.[11]
