Valerie Brathwaite Nelson
Valerie Brathwaite Nelson is a judge for the 2nd Department of the New York Supreme Court Appellate Division. She assumed office in 2016. Her current term ends on December 31, 2026.
Nelson (Democratic Party) ran for re-election for judge of the New York Supreme Court 11th Judicial District. She won in the general election on November 6, 2018.
Education
Brathwaite Nelson received her B.A. degree from Syracuse University and her J.D. degree from George Washington University.[1]
Career
Brathwaite Nelson began her career as a law clerk for U.S. Congresswoman Shirley Chisholm. She then worked as an attorney for the National Labor Relations Board, an attorney for the New York State Senate Staff, and as a private practice attorney. She served on the New York City Civil Court of Queens County prior to her election to the Queens County Supreme Court in 2005.[1]
